Book Review: Wake, Lisa McMann

Wake (Wake, #1)Wake by Lisa McMann

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Summary: For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people’s dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie’s seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.
She can’t tell anybody about what she does they’d never believe her, or worse, they’d think she’s a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn’t want and can’t control.
Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else’s twisted psyche. She is a participant.

Review:

I just have so many questions that weren’t even addressed during the book, like what’s the deal with Janie and her mother? How did she get her powers? Why don’t most of the characters have much of a personality? What kind of a name is Cabel?

(That last one is actually completely serious. I’ve never seen anyone with that name irl.)

The characters were at least semi-likable, but they only felt partially fleshed-out. The plot was fast-paced and interesting, but it skipped over a lot and left me with the questions above. At least this was a quick read- it only took me about an hour to get through the entire book.
